A host reached out to me recently after investing in a brand new WordPress site for her rentals. It looked great. There was one problem, and it was a big one.
Her designer built it as an ecommerce setup. It does not talk to OwnerRez at all.
Nobody told her what that meant. Every time a night gets booked or blocked in OwnerRez, she now has to remember to update her website too. Two places. Two calendars. Miss one update and her site shows dates as open that are already taken.
She is not careless. She was never told she had a second calendar to manage.
Why this happens
A designer who usually builds online stores reaches for the tools they know. A store is built to sell products. A rental is built around nights, availability, and reservations that already live in your OwnerRez account.
The site looks right. The checkout looks right. The calendar underneath it is not connected to the one that runs your business.
What a disconnected site costs you
Wrong availability. Your guest sees open dates that are not open, or blocked dates that are open to book.
Double work. Every change happens twice, forever.
Lost trust. A guest who picks dates on your site and then hears "sorry, that is taken" does not come back to book direct. They go back to the places they already know.
Direct bookings only grow if the guest's first experience works.
The rule: one calendar
OwnerRez is where your reservations live. Your website should work from that calendar, not compete with it.
If you have to update your site by hand when your bookings change, the site is not connected to your OwnerRez account. That is the thing to find out before you pay anyone.
Five questions to ask any designer before you sign
- Where does my availability live after launch? The right answer is OwnerRez, and nowhere else.
- When a guest books on my site, where does that reservation land? It should land in OwnerRez.
- If I block dates in OwnerRez, what happens on the website? You should not have to touch the site.
- Have you built a site connected to an OwnerRez account before? Ask to see it live.
- Who owns the hosting and the logins? You should. (More on this in the next post.)
If the answers are vague, that tells you what you need to know.
Your three paths, and where this fits
There are three ways to run a direct booking site for OwnerRez hosts:
- A hosted site. It lives inside the OwnerRez system, so there is one calendar by design.
- A custom WordPress site. It gives you full design freedom, and it has to be built to connect to your OwnerRez account.
- A hybrid. It combines the two, again built to connect to your account.
None of these is the wrong choice by itself. The wrong choice is the one that does not match how you run your rentals. A site that does not connect to OwnerRez is the most expensive mistake I see.
Already in this spot?
If you already have a site and you are updating dates in two places, start by finding out what your site is actually connected to. That answer decides your next step. Sometimes the fix is small. Sometimes it is a rebuild. Either way, you want to know before you spend more.
Not sure which path fits your rentals?
I spend most of my calls helping hosts choose the right direct booking site path, so they do not pay for the wrong one. I know how OwnerRez works, and I know the hosted and WordPress options inside and out.
Bring me your site, your plans, or just your questions. We will figure out the right path together.
